Wappen Field 2.0 at Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Grand Rapids, MI, 2011

This installation is an occasion to imagine the unconscious as energy driven by collective subliminal desires. These proclivities shape societies. Political and economic regimes reflect this rhythm, shuttling through the pendulum of history, between repression and enlightened engagement.

“Among the most sophisticated in terms of concept and form was Wappen Field by Michelle Jaffé, of New York. A group of highly polished, frontal helmets is suspended from the ceiling. Viewers are encouraged to step forward from behind and experience the helmet as if wearing it.”
